SS CHANGES RECOVERY OF OVERPAYMENT POLICY

Last year, under President Joe Biden an Social Security Commissioner, Martin O’Malley,  the Agency only recovered 10% of overpayments each month.  This policy recognized that Social Security is the sole support of the overwhelming number of disability recipients and an important source for retirees.  The recovery rate for SSI recipients remains 10%

Commissioner O’Malley resigned Now Acting Commissioner of SS, Lee Dudek, announced that, beginning March 27, 2025, SS will withhold 100% of the monthly benefit, until it is repaid, in full.

The former policy requires full payment unless the recipient is without fault in generating the overpayment and  cannot afford to pay it back.

If someone cannot afford to pay back the full amount he or she should call SS at the national toll free #, which is 800 772-1213. Good luck getting through.
